Rehoming Procedure

Greyhound Rescue North East work slightly differently from other Greyhound homing kennels.
As we are a smaller independent re-homing kennel, which is not reliant upon the support of any outside body, we don’t have as many dogs as other kennels.

This means that we can really get to know our dogs personalities, likes and dislikes.
Because of this, we like to think that we can offer you a more personalised homing process.
Our kennels are not open to the public, the reasons that we work this way, is that we think that it can be very unsettling for the dogs if there is a constant stream of strangers visiting the kennels. We also think that it can be a quite confusing experience for visitors who are confronted by 20 pairs of ‘pick me eyes’! By viewing all the dogs at our kennels, you may end up picking a dog that is completely unsuitable for your lifestyle/circumstances.

Our dogs are all very special to us and we want to be sure that we place them in their ‘forever home’ first time around and we find that working this way is best for the dogs, best for you and best for us.

As a more personal service, we bring your chosen dog out to you when we do the homecheck.

Areas we cover for Rehoming

Although we would love our rehoming to cover the whole of the UK it is just not possible.

A small independent rescue with a voluntary staff of under 5, our cut off points are:

North East and surrounding areas, up to the borders of Scotland.

Parts of North Yorkshire.

Rules of Rehoming

  1. I undertake not to part with possession of any greyhound provided by Greyhound Rescue.
  1. I will not have the greyhound destroyed except on the advice of a veterinary surgeon in order to relieve suffering from any condition which is untreatable. However, if the greyhound is destroyed I will contact Greyhound Rescue North East ASAP.
  2. I undertake to keep the greyhound in a happy and healthy condition and provide suitable food and shelter.
  3. I will obtain prompt veterinary treatment in case of accident or illness.
  4. I will ensure that the greyhound always wears a collar bearing my name, address and telephone number.
  5. I will exercise the greyhound regularly.
  6. If the greyhound should go missing, I will inform the Police, local dog pound, local rescue centres, micro chip office and Greyhound Rescue North East within 24 hours.
  7. I will not chain or tie up the greyhound and I will not leave the greyhound without companionship for long periods.
  8. I will notify Greyhound Rescue North East of any change in my address and telephone number.
  9. I will not race the Greyhound or allow the Greyhound to be raced
  10. I will not use or let the Greyhound be used for hunting or lamping.

If you are unable to continue to home one of our dog for any reason, the dog must be returned to us. No dog can be sold, given away or exchanged in any way.

Most of our dogs are ex racers and have never been in a home environment before, accidents may happen.

Donations for Rehoming

Although we do not like to put a ‘set price’ on a dog that comes up for re-homing, to cover some of the costs of getting a dog ready for his/her new home, we do ask for a voluntary donation that is non refundable when adopting one of our dogs.

Each greyhound costs us at least £150 prior to re-homing, so although we only ask for a minimum donation of £70 we would ask you to consider giving more if at all possible – the dogs will be very grateful and so will we!

Please keep in mind that all dogs are Speyed/Neutered, Vaccinated, Micro-chipped, Wormed and re-homed with 4 weeks free Pet Insurance. Also, all dogs go home with a leather Greyhound collar and lead.  Coats can be bought so please enquire with rescue.

We do prefer personal cheques made payable to:

GREYHOUND RESCUE NORTH EAST

Since all our helpers, work on a voluntary bases, all monies from your donation will be used for saving other Greyhounds.

Keep a grip of your Dog

One of the conditions of adopting one of our dogs is that you must sign a agreement form which states that you are not allowed to let the dog run off lead in a public area for at least 3 month after the adoption.

We feel that 3 months is enough time for you to get to know your dog and also for the dog to get to know that you are the owner.

Also please remember that racing greyhounds are used to being on lead and have spent most of their years being exercised on a lead, only to be let off when racing or trialling.
