Why Greyhounds

1. Greyhounds bleed reasonably quickly

2. They are extremely gentle and patient dogs who are used to being handled.

3.They have very thin skin, making the insertion of the needle easier.

4.They have more red blood cells than an average dog.

5.They have no congenital blood disorders.

6. Greyhounds like sharing themselves and their love.

BLOOD DONOR INFORMATION

Requirements

Dogs should be aged between 2 and 8 years.

A lean body weight of around 25kg.

Current vaccinations for distemper, parvo, adenovirus, leptospirosis and parainfluenza.

No dogs that have travel abroad to be used.

No bitches that have had litters.

Dogs that have never received a blood transfusion before.

Friends that have received a Blood Transfusion

Oscar

Oscar had a typical doberman problem in that he lacks a certain clotting factor (similar to hamophilia in humans) and he had been bleeding from an innocuous lesion in his mouth for 24 hours and also occasionally throughout the last 2 years. His blood had soaked through two thick rugs and was constantly dripping from his mouth and he was very weak. This time the bleeding was not going to (could not) stop. He stopped bleeding half way through his plasma tranfusion and has not started bleeding since (3 weeks) and his own vets are now doing all the necessary tests and have him on treatment to try and stimulate his production of the clotting factor and ensure that they have access to the products neccessary should he begin to bleed again.

Stanley to the rescue

(see news page)

Saving yet another dogs life comes easily to Stanley. Good lucks, charm or heroism does not come into it as what saved another dogs life is Stanley's Blood.

Stanley's owner got a call from local vets to ask if he could come in to give blood and help save a dogs life. He was quickly taken in, gave blood, ate his after session treat and left. All this was done in less than a hour.

Rocky pictured( below) is the lucky boy who has received Stanley's blood. We have been told that this new blood has given Rocky a new lease of life.
